Mike Flanagan, director of The Dark Tower TV show, provides positive progress update: ‘We’re making excellent headway’

The journey to successfully bring The Dark Tower books to life on the screen has been an epic endeavor, mirroring the intricacies of Stephen King’s captivating series. Director Mike Flanagan, known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House, is currently taking up the challenge of adapting The Gunslinger’s story for the screen. During a Q&A session at the Tribeca Film Festival, Flanagan expressed his enthusiasm for The Dark Tower when asked about his dream project. He emphasized his optimism, highlighting the progress made with the support of trusted partners. Although details remain confidential, Flanagan’s hopes are high for the project.

Last December, Deadline disclosed that Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy were collaborating on an adaptation of The Dark Tower books. Flanagan envisioned a five-season TV series followed by two standalone feature films. He described the pilot script as one of his favorite projects, expressing gratitude for Stephen King’s trust in their abilities. The previous film adaptation of The Dark Tower in 2017, featuring Idris Elba as the protagonist Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, was met with both critical and commercial disappointment. Subsequent attempts at a TV pilot were also unsuccessful.

Flanagan’s previous experience with adapting King’s works, such as Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, has given him valuable insight into bringing complex stories to life on screen. His upcoming project, a miniseries called The Fall of the House of Usher based on Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, is set to premiere on Netflix this fall. As Flanagan continues to work on various projects, The Dark Tower remains a passion project for him, and he is determined to find the right partners to realize its full potential.
